Frederick Harold Moran was born in Melbourne in May 1890. He graduated in medicine from the University of Melbourne in 1914 and had RMO appointments at the Royal Melbourne, the Children's, and the Women's Hospitals.
He served as a medical officer with the RAMC in World War I. In the
London Gazette
of January 1919 the announcement is made of the awarding of the Military Cross to him for bravery in action at Bucquoy on 22 August 1918. The citation is brief but a significant reflection of his excellence:
. . conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an advance. Throughout the operation he maintained his aid-post practically at the battery positions and dressed the wounded of many units under heavy shell fire. He more than once passed through heavy barrage to get at and attend to the wounded. His zeal and disregard to personal safety were splendid.
After the war he took the MRCP examination in 1925 and subsequently was admitted to membership of the RACP in 1943 and fellowship in 1975. He had been clinical assistant to the outpatients at the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London, and this led to his medical career in paediatrics. He was an honorary colonel in the AAMC Reserve from 1939 to 1946.
