Born
23/11/1895
Robert Steel was born in Sydney, the son of Robert Samuel Steel, a builder and architect. After completing his secondary education at Fort Street Boys' High School, Robert joined the AIF and served in the Australian Field Artillery from
1916 to 1919. He returned to Australia and graduated from the University of Sydney in 1923.
He held hospital appointments at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, 'The Coast' Hospital and The Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Sydney and then undertook a training fellowship at the Mayo Clinic from 1926 to 1929. In 1929 he went to London and took the MRCP, returning to Australia to establish his practice in internal medicine with a special interest in clinical allergy.
He was a foundation fellow of the College in 1938, a fellow and one time president of the Australian Society of Allergists and a past chairman of the section of allergy of the BMA. In 1930 he married Katherine Sansome and they had a son and a daughter. In 1954 his contribution to medicine was recognised through his award of the Order of the British Empire. In addition he was a Knight of the Venerable Order of St John.
