Underwent Haematology training and research with Prof Carl de Gruchy 1967-68 subsequently asked to deliver de Gruchy Oration in 2013. Became very aware of deficiencies in management of acute leukaemia in Qld in 1972 and began fund raising leading to origin of Leukaemia Foundation in 1974 and the purchase of the first cell separator. 1988 took my first partner, Dr Ian Bunce and soon after, with Dr Paul Eliadis - established Haematology Clinics of Australia, now ICON, which now gives integrated haematology and cancer care nationally and internationally. Retired from active practice September 2017. I graduated from Queensland University in 1963. In 1967 I moved to Melbourne to work under Prof Carl de Gruchy researching megakaryocyte proliferation with Prof David Penington, I was subsequently asked to deliver de Gruchy Oration in 2013. I progressed to Visiting Consultant at Alfred and Royal Children’s Hospitals Melbourne. I returned to Brisbane as Clinical Haematologist at Royal Brisbane Hospital. From there I moved to private practice with consultancies at Mater aAdukt and Childrens Hospital and Royal Brisbane. I Became very aware of deficiencies in management of acute leukaemia in Qld in 1972 and began fund raising leading to origin of Leukaemia Foundation in 1974 and the purchase of the first cell separator. In 1974 with assistance of members of Holland Park Lions Club I established the Leukaemia Society of Queensland. This society has now expanded to become national with branches and support structures in all states. This society introduced bone marrow transplantation to Queensland in late 80’s. I took my first partner Dr Ian Bunce and soon after, in 1988 with Dr Paul Eliadis - established Haematology Clinics of Australia (HOCA), now ICON, which now gives integrated haematology and cancer care nationally and internationally. I retired from clinical practice in 2017. My specialty is Clinical Haematology / Oncology and Pathology. I was awarded the Order of Australia for services to Haematology and advocate for patients Life Member AMA - Leukaemia Foundation of Australia.
