The Adult Medicine and Paediatric & Child Health Divisional Written Examination Committee (AM & PCH WExC) is seeking Expressions of Interest from Fellows to join the Fellow Pool supporting the Divisional Written Examinations (DWE).
This opportunity allows Fellows to contribute meaningfully to the quality, integrity, and continuous improvement of the DWE, while collaborating with colleagues from across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Fellows appointed to the pool may be invited to participate in the following key activities.
Open Book Review
The Open Book Review is a structured quality assurance process conducted in the lead-up to each Divisional Written Examination (held twice per year, February and October).
During the process, Fellows:
- review examination questions in an ‘open book’ format
- verify accuracy, clarity, and clinical relevance
- ensure alignment with current standards of practice and examination blueprints
- identify any ambiguity or potential issues prior to finalisation
Participation in Open Book is an essential component of maintaining examination quality and fairness. It provides valuable insight into the assessment lifecycle and contributes directly to candidate experience.
Standard Setting Calibrations
Standard Setting Calibration meetings are held periodically, or when psychometrically required, to determine and validate the examination standard.
These sessions:
- are typically held face-to-face in Sydney
- involve structured discussion and judgement of examination items
- ensure the defensibility and consistency of examination standards
- support governance and best practice in assessment
Standard Setting provides Fellows with deeper exposure to assessment methodology and the psychometric principles underpinning the DWE.
Why Participate?
Both Open Book and Standard Setting activities:
- provide direct involvement in the DWE process
- strengthen understanding of assessment design and governance
- offer collaboration with Fellows from across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand
- contribute to maintaining high-quality, fair, and defensible examinations
This is a valuable professional development opportunity for Fellows interested in assessment, education, and quality improvement.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- be a Fellow of the RACP
- have current clinical experience and familiarity with contemporary practice
- demonstrate an interest in medical education and assessment
Appointment
Appointments will be made to a Fellow Pool, and members may be called upon as required, based on examination scheduling and psychometric needs.
