Event Details
Medical gender reassignment in minors. Why are we cautious in Finland?
Date:
14 Apr 2026 at 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Host:
National Association of Practising Psychiatrists (NAPP)
Join Professor Riittakerttu Kaltiala, Chief Psychiatrist at Tampere University Hospital, presenting on gender identity care in young people.
About
Finland was among the early adopters of gender identity assessments for minors, including pathways to medical intervention. However, clinical outcomes and patient profiles didn't align with initial expectations, while referrals increased rapidly.
In response, Finland introduced national guidelines in 2020 prioritising psychosocial support due to limited evidence for early medical interventions.
In this session, Professor Kaltiala will share:
- Real world clinical insights from Finland
- Key research findings shaping current practise
- Ongoing challenges in paediatric gender medicine
- Implications for clinicians working with young people
Speaker
Professor Riittakerttu Kaltiala is Chief Psychiatrist of Finland’s national gender identity services for young people, with extensive clinical and research experience in adolescent gender dysphoria.
As young people presenting in specialised gender identity services are a heterogeneous group with a variety of needs, a holistic assessment and individualised treatment plan is warranted.
