The 2023 Medical Training Survey results

Results of the Medical Board of Australia’s fifth annual Medical Training Survey are now available. The anonymous survey was open from August – October 2023, and was completed by 46% of RACP trainees (n=3,305).
Key findings
Training settings continue to facilitate good training
- 75% of trainees would recommend their current workplace to others, up from 74% in 2022.
- 86% of trainees rated the quality of their clinical supervision as excellent or good, up from 84% in 2022.
Need for advocacy to improve the training journey
- 74% of trainees agreed/strongly agreed there is a positive culture at their workplace, up from 71% in 2022
- 55% of trainees felt their daily workload was heavy or very heavy, down from 60% in 2022
- 49% of trainees agreed/strongly agreed that the RACP supports flexible training arrangements, up from 43% in 2022
Importance of safe training environments
- The incidence of bullying, harassment, discrimination and racism both experienced and witnessed by trainees remains high (22% experienced; 35% witnessed) although the reporting of these behaviours is starting to increase.
Use of RACP resources
- Only 31% trainees agreed/strongly agreed that the RACP provides access to psychological and/or mental health support services, remaining unchanged from 2022.

The RACP uses the results of the MTS to:
- Strengthen RACP training programs and activities
- Drive improvements in training settings by identifying settings with results that indicate potential concerns and working with local leaders to explore and leverage the data to advocate for support for training
- Acknowledge high performing training settings by identifying those with results that point towards excellence in areas such as quality of clinical supervision, overall satisfaction, or support for trainee wellbeing
- Inform systemic change by using results in the development of strategic approaches to improve physician training, our services and the culture of medicine
