The RACP is pleased to share the results of the Medical Board of Australia’s 2025 Medical Training Survey (MTS), now in its seventh year.
The survey ran between August and October 2025 and provides anonymous, data-driven insights that help us strengthen the quality and consistency of our training programs.
These results are more than just numbers. They are a reflection of trainee voices and a roadmap for continuous improvement. We encourage our members to explore the findings and consider how they can inform college-wide and local education and advocacy efforts.
The MTS was completed by 23 per cent of RACP trainees in Australia, including Overseas Trained Physicians who are currently undertaking supervised practice in Australia (n=1,842).
Key findings
The quality of training and clinical supervision remains high:
- 79 per cent of RACP trainees would recommend their current workplace to others (up from 76 per cent in 2024)
- 86 per cent of RACP trainees rated the quality of their clinical supervision as excellent or good (unchanged from 2024).
We continue our work to improve the support we provide to our members who occupy vital supervisor and educational leadership roles. We are also looking to also improve our recognition of supervisory roles in 2026.
Increased protected study time in service delivery contexts:
- 46 per cent of RACP trainees felt their job responsibilities prevented them from meeting training requirements sometimes or often (down from 49 per cent in 2024)
- 19 per cent of RACP trainees did not have access to protected study time/leave (down from 22 per cent in 2024)
- 53 per cent of RACP trainees felt their workload was heavy or very heavy (down from 54 per cent in 2024)
- 74 per cent of RACP trainees agreed/strongly agreed that their employer supports them to attend formal and informal teaching sessions (up from 73 per cent in 2024)
In 2026, the College will continue its new Workforce and Healthcare Reform Advocacy program featuring increased calls for protected training and education time for members. We are also looking at our Accreditation Standards to see how these can better support legitimising and protecting education activities as a core function of accredited training settings.
The importance of safe training environments:
- 78 per cent of RACP trainees agreed/strongly agreed there is a positive culture at their workplace (up from 76 per cent in 2024)
- The incidence of bullying, harassment, discrimination and racism, both experienced and witnessed, by RACP trainees remains high (23 per cent experienced; 32 per cent witnessed). The reporting of these behaviours is increasing, as is the follow-up of these reports.
We continue our important work to improve the psychological safety of trainees in training settings and maintain our zero tolerance stance on unprofessional behaviours. Please refer to the RACP Wellbeing Services page for more information on the support services available to trainees.
Increased support for trainee wellbeing:
- 77 per cent of RACP trainees agreed/strongly agreed that their workplace supports wellbeing (up from 74 per cent in 2024)
- 56 per cent of RACP trainees agreed/strongly agreed that the RACP supports flexible training arrangements (up from 53 per cent in 2024)
- 35 per cent of RACP trainees agreed/strongly agreed that the RACP provides access to psychological and/or mental health support services (up from 29 per cent in 2024)
- 36 per cent of RACP trainees agreed/strongly agreed that there are safe mechanisms for raising training/wellbeing concerns with the College (up from 30 per cent in 2024).
The Member Health and Wellbeing Strategic Plan outlines the College’s commitment to enhancing member wellbeing at both individual and systemic levels. Individual support is free and readily available through the RACP Support Program and our range of other resources.

How RACP uses the survey data
The RACP leverages these survey results to:
- Enhance our training programs and activities
- Identify and support training settings. Where results suggest potential concerns, we’ll work with local leaders to advocate for improvements
- Celebrate excellence by recognising training settings with outstanding results in areas like clinical supervision, trainee wellbeing, and overall satisfaction
- Drive strategic change by influencing broader initiatives to improve physician training, member services and the culture of medicine.
We sincerely thank all RACP trainees and eligible Overseas Trained Physicians who participated in the 2025 MTS. Your feedback is vital to shaping the future of medical education.
