Program overview

General Rehabilitation MedicineIn Advanced Training in General Rehabilitation Medicine, you’ll explore a new depth of specialty training in diagnosis, assessment, prevention and management of an individual with a disability due to illness or injury. You will train under supervision and prepare for independent practice as a consultant. The program builds your skills through work-based learning and assessment tools.

Program updates

The General Rehabilitation Medicine Advanced Training Program is evaluated biennially by the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM) Training Committee to ensure that it’s in line with educational best practice. Changes in program requirements may occur and could impact your training plan. The College will provide sufficient notice prior to implementing any change. You must always ensure you’re following the correct requirements during your training.

PREP entry requirements

Prospective trainees must:

  • hold general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia if undertaking training in Australia or medical registration with general scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand if undertaking training in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • have completed 2 full years (or full-time equivalent) of postgraduate supervised training in general medical and surgical areas within the last 5 years
  • have documentary evidence of appointment to an appropriate AFRM accredited training position.

All trainees need to apply for Advanced Training each year.

Duration

Advanced Training in General Rehabilitation Medicine requires 4 years (48 months) of full-time equivalent (FTE) training.

Fellowship

Once you've completed all requirements of your training and the AFRM Education Committee has recommended you for admission, the College will invite you to apply for Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.

As a Fellow in active practice in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas, you’ll need to meet the annual requirements of the Continuing Professional Development program.
