Program overview

Paediatric Emergency MedicineIn Advanced Training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, you’ll explore in-depth specialty training in short-term emergency treatment of children, from neonates to adolescents. You will train under supervision and prepare for independent practice as a consultant. The program builds your skills through work-based learning and assessment tools.

Program updates

The Advanced Training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine Program is evaluated biennially by the Committee for Joint College Training (CJCT) in Paediatric Emergency Medicine to ensure that it’s in line with educational best practice. Changes in program requirements may occur and could impact your training plan. The College will provide sufficient notice prior to implementing any change. You must always ensure you’re following the correct requirements during your training.

Entry requirements

Trainees can enter Advanced Training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine through either the RACP stream or Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) stream.

Note: The stream that you enter the Advanced Training Program through, is the College that administers the program for you.

Dual Fellowship with the ACEM and RACP in Paediatric Emergency Medicine

* For ACEM trainees, a total of 24 months training in an adult emergency department (ED) is required, of which 12 months may be undertaken during provisional training. Therefore, the amount of adult ED training required during Advanced Training can vary between 12 and 24 months depending on the amount undertaken during provisional training.
RACP Stream

All prospective RACP trainees must have:

  • completed RACP Basic Training, including Written and Clinical Examinations
  • a current medical registration
  • been appointed to an appropriate Advanced Training position

New and current trainees need to apply for Advanced Training each year.

ACEM stream

ACEM trainees can register their interest in the program with ACEM at any stage. You’re advised to register early, as this allows for appropriate tailoring of your program.

To be eligible to train under the CJCT in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, ACEM stream trainees must have been accepted into Advanced Training by successfully completing:

  • 24 months of emergency medicine basic training
  • a minimum of 12 months provisional training
  • the ACEM Primary Examination

Duration

Advanced Training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine requires 3 years (36 months) of full-time equivalent (FTE) training.

Fellowship

Once you've completed all requirements of your training and the CJCT in Paediatric Emergency Medicine has recommended you for admission, the College will invite you to apply for Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

As a Fellow in active practice in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas, you’ll need to meet the annual requirements of the Continuing Professional Development program.

Dual Fellowship

Following your admission to Fellowship to the RACP, you can complete additional requirements to obtain dual Fellowship.

RACP Fellows must complete:

  • 12 months of adult emergency medicine training
  • the ACEM research requirement
  • the ACEM Fellowship Exam
