Applicants who want to join or progress through the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Advanced Training Program and meet the eligibility criteria must complete an application form.
Before submitting your application, you must consult with your Regional Training Program Director (TPD), who will act as a point of contact and provide assistance with the application process.
New trainees
- Contact your TPD for an initial assessment of your suitability.
- Following your initial assessment, submit an application for admission form (DOC) and other supporting documents to OccEnvMed@racp.edu.au
Applications for entry are assessed and considered by the Faculty Training Committee (FTC). It is the responsibility of the applicant to find a suitable supervisor, your TPD may assist the applicant in this process.
Applicants are responsible for submitting a completed and TPD-endorsed application form and required documentation to the RACP by the application deadline. If any part of the application is incomplete, the whole application will be returned to the applicant for resubmission. Resubmitted applications may not be assessed by the FTC until their next scheduled meeting.
Successful applicants will be sent confirmation of enrolment in the training program and instructions on payment of training fees. If the application is unsuccessful, a letter of explanation will be sent to the applicant.
Nominating eligible supervisors
From mid-2023, you’re required to nominate eligible supervisors who meet the supervision requirements of the training program.

This list isn’t available for post-Fellowship trainees. Post-Fellowship trainees can contact us to confirm supervisor eligibility.

Admission to training
30 September | for commencement on 1 January
31 March | for commencement on 1 July
Annual registration
30 November | for trainees who commenced 1 January
30 May | for trainees who commenced 1 July
You’re responsible for organising all necessary documentation for submission by the deadline. We recommend that you keep a copy of your application for future reference.

Late applications
Late applications will be considered up to 1 month after the deadline.
Applications received 1 month after the deadline won’t be considered unless exceptional circumstances can be demonstrated in line with the Special Considerations for Assessment Policy.
Late applications may incur a fee.
Late fees won't apply if supervisor approval is pending after the deadline.

About your training position
Training approval and certification
Upon completion of a training period, the Faculty Training Committee considers your progress according to the program requirements. If all requirements of training have been satisfactorily completed, the Committee will certify the period of training.
All training needs to be undertaken at accredited settings.
The College is not involved in the recruitment and selection of trainees. Our role is to set and monitor standards for selection and provide advice to settings and their selection committees.
New trainees
New applicants to the training program must already be working in an accredited position, undertaking a minimum of 20 hours per week of occupational and environmental medicine practice.
Applicants must check that their workplace is an accredited setting. If it isn’t, an Accreditation Assessment Form (DOC) must be submitted before you apply for training.
Training position criteria
When you have found employment, the position must be approved by your Regional TPD.
A suitable training position should:
- give some experience across all domains of the curriculum during training, for example:
- access to cases from a wide range of employment like the manufacturing industry, mining, small industry, office workers or outside workers
- access to varied consults such as patient treatment, workplace assessments, health surveillance and supervision of vocational rehabilitation
- independent medical opinions on issues such as a worker’s fitness to perform certain work duties
- the work-relatedness of a worker’s condition
- worker impairment assessments
- advice to companies on issues such as illness or injury prevention strategies
- the management of sickness absence
- give exposure to a wide range of clinical, preventive and population-based aspects of occupational medicine, for example chronic musculoskeletal problems, psychological cases, acute injury, noise-induced hearing loss, respiratory conditions, pesticide exposure and heavy metal exposure
- a single position is unlikely to meet all the requirements for professional development to consultant level
- you may need to change jobs or incorporate new activities into an existing position, arranging a short-term secondment to a new area, or undertaking specific course work
- you should consider positions across industry, Government, the Defence Forces, academia or consulting practice
- overall allow active trainees to complete all program requirements in person or online
- in a 6-month training period, allow a full-time trainee be able to easily complete at least 5 learning objectives of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Training Curriculum from actual practice in occupational and environmental medicine
- further learning objectives can be reached during a 6-month training period by requirements such as university study, meeting attendance and others
A maximum of 1 year of full-time research can be approved as a training position.
It's expected that active trainees should be able to complete all program requirements, such as participate in regional training meetings and face-to-face or online review meetings with their Educational Supervisor.

Rotation or supervision changes
Changes to your rotation require you to re-submit an application form to your training committee as soon as possible. This includes any changes to sites, dates of rotations and flexible training arrangements.
Change to your supervision must be notified as soon as possible by submitting a Supervisor Details Amendment Form (DOC).
Some changes may require a review of the approval decision and can affect the certification of your training.
