Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals – Division of Medicine

Full-time for 12 months, with the possibility of extension

Provide consultant-level management of inpatients admitted with Gastrointestinal and Hepatology conditions within Royal Darwin Hospital (RDH) and Palmerston Regional Hospital (PRH).

This will encompass the assessment of acute inpatients, appropriate investigation, and formulation of management plans.

High-level leadership and management skills are required to supervise and support a team of junior medical staff and nurses, coordinating care for a large number of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and Hepatology outpatients.

An exceptional understanding of complex discharge planning and a willingness to engage ambulatory care services are essential in this challenging environment.

Participation in elective endoscopy lists, the on-call roster, and remote outreach services may also be required.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide consultant ward services, including supervision, teaching and support of junior medical officers (Advanced Trainees, Basic Physician Trainees, Resident Medical Officers, Interns and medical students) and nursing colleagues
2. Participate in regular elective outpatient endoscopy lists and the on-call roster
3. Attend regular departmental meetings, including Consultant Meetings, Mortality and Morbidity meetings, Journal Club and Radiology Meetings
4. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies, and procedures to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe services and workplaces

Essential qualifications

1. Eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

   Applicants may be:

   • A Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Gastroenterology and Hepatology with specialist registration and certification in Adult Gastroscopy and Adult Colonoscopy through the Conjoint Committee for Recognition and Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE), including current recertification where applicable; or
   • A final-year Advanced Trainee in Gastroenterology and Hepatology expected to obtain FRACP within 12 months; or
   • An overseas-trained physician assessed by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) as substantially or suitably comparable to an Australian-trained specialist and eligible to work in Australia.

   Applicants should demonstrate training and experience in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and be eligible for, hold, or be working towards CCRTGE certification in Adult Gastroscopy and Adult Colonoscopy, where applicable

2. Highly developed patient assessment, investigation, interpretation, and management skills to provide appropriate high-quality care

3. Exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment, as a team member

4. Detailed knowledge of community care services to facilitate safe transition to home after discharge

5. An interest in and a commitment to improving Aboriginal health
