There are 3 accredited Rehabilitation Registrar positions available at the Royal Darwin Hospital & Palmerston Hospital for 2027. A 6 months or 12 months contract is recommended for any advanced or Basic trainee. The Royal Darwin Hospital is a 360 bed tertiary hospital & is well supported by a large range of specialties & junior medical officer teaching.
The rehabilitation services expanded in 2018 & moved to new facilities at the Palmerston Hospital in September 2018. This is a new 116 bed hospital 20 minutes from RDH but is one campus. The whole service is now in a purpose built facility along with the Geriatric service, 24 Hour ED, Pathology & Radiology. The unit has a 24 bed general rehabilitation ward dealing with a wide case mix of adult rehabilitation. This ranges from stroke/neurological, amputee, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopaedic & multiple trauma.
There's extensive exposure to the Indigenous culture & opportunities to attend Outreach clinics. A private hospital with a rehabilitation ward is also collocated at RDH. Outpatient clinics cover prosthetics/orthotics, chronic pain, stroke & brain injury. Exposure to intrathecal pumps & botulinum toxin injections is available. There's also onsite hydrotherapy facilities & extensive allied health service. The positions are supported by RMOs. There's a structured teaching program with formal learning contracts. The positions are supervised by 4 AFRM Consultants.
Essential qualifications
Our previous trainees have been successful in Module 1 & 2 and the Fellowship examinations. The positions are suitable for Advanced or Basic AFRM trainee & all applications will be considered.
- Eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Passed RACP written and clinical exam or recognised overseas equivalent
- PGY3+ and willing to step up to a Registrar role with strong background in medical terms or within 2 years of completing fellowship training or previous experience as a Medical Registrar (Senior REG)
- Sound clinical knowledge in assessment and management of patients and a commitment to provide appropriate high quality service.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work environment, as a team member
