AMD Workplan 2023 to 2025
The AMD Council met for the first time this year on 28 February 2023. The agenda focused on the AMD workplan, which was endorsed by the Board at their February meeting. I am very proud of the consideration and effort that the AMD Council and AMD Executive Committee have put into the workplan, and I look forward to working with the Council to implement it.
The five key initiatives are:
- Improving the capacity of adult medicine to respond to workforce needs
- Ensuring equity, fairness, and transparency in Advanced Training
- Supporting and growing the Physician Leader
- Articulating the rationale and function of the AMD
- Supporting the wellbeing of AMD Fellows and trainees.

AChSHM Annual Scientific Meeting – 18 March 2023
Lastly, I want to draw attention to the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine Annual Scientific Meeting (AChSHM ASM) that is being held in Sydney on Saturday, 18 March 2023. The Organising Committee has done a wonderful job creating a fantastic program. If this is an area that you are interested in, I would encourage you to attend. AChSHM President’s Post
Kia ora koutou
I travelled across the ditch from Aotearoa New Zealand to Sydney for a big three days of face-to-face meetings and events this week. We had the AChSHM Committee meeting on Thursday, 16 March, the Advanced Trainee Meeting (ATM) on Friday, 17 March, and will hold the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) tomorrow, Saturday, 18 March.
The theme for the ASM is The Future of Sexual Health and will cover topics such as antibiotic allergies in sexual health, sexually transmitted infection (STI) vaccines, ending HIV transmission by 2025, and mpox (Monkeypox). All the ASM details can be found on the AChSHM ASM 2023 website. The ATM program and details are also available on the ASM website.
After not being able to meet face-to-face with many members for several years, I am, like many Fellows and trainees, looking forward to this exciting learning and networking opportunity.
In addition to the above, I am also attending a forum with the RACP President, the Division, Faculty and Chapter Presidents, and the Specialty Society representatives. I look forward to engaging with my peers at this important event.

AChPM President’s Post
Hello and kia ora,
The first AChPM Committee meeting was held on 7 March 2023 via videoconference. We discussed the workplan for 2023 to 2025 which contains seven key initiatives. The Committee added several deliverables under each of the initiatives.
We know we have a big job ahead of us, with initiatives addressing core business such as education. However, I can assure you that my peers and I are up to the challenge. The next steps include progressing the final workplan to the AMD Executive Committee for final endorsement, and thereafter I will be sharing our plan with everyone in the wider AChPM community.
At the Chapter meeting we also heard from our Training Committee Chair and our Trainee Representative. We understand that the challenges and delays experienced last year are lessening, however we continue to monitor these issues and we will continue to advocate for our trainees.

Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine President
Hello and kia ora,
I recently attended the International Medicine in Addiction (IMiA) Conference from 17 to 19 February in Melbourne. IMiA is a biennial event appealing to medical practitioners and allied health professionals practising in addiction medicine. The conference is convened between the RACP, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) with each college assuming the lead convenor role on a six-yearly cycle. This year it was convened by RANZCP and supported by the RACGP and RACP.
The event was well attended by more than 450 attendees and featured a fantastic two-and-a-half-day face-to-face program with lots of thought-provoking topics. It was a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues and to meet new contacts across the addiction medicine community.
My key takeaway messages were:
- the need for stronger leadership in national and state opioid policy and the role all three Colleges could have
- the importance of addressing trauma in the patient populations we see clinically
- the strengthened evidence base for vaporised nicotine for people who are tobacco dependent.
I would like to thank all three colleges, speakers, attendees and organisers for a great event. I look forward to reviewing the feedback from the event imminently.
We recently held the first AChAM meeting of the year on 24 February. The main priority for the Chapter during this meeting was to review and finalise the workplan for the 2023 to 2025 period. Once the workplan is formally endorsed by the AMD Executive Committee (AMDEX), we will share the key initiatives with you all.

2023 RACP Educational Development (Study) Grants
Applications for the 2023 RACP Educational Development (Study) Grants open on Monday, 27 March 2023. The grants support members to undertake further educational training or to develop educational initiatives.
Awards available for this round include:
- Skilled Medical Scholarships for Advancement of Indigenous Health
- Aotearoa New Zealand Educational Development Grant
- Richard Kemp Memorial Fellowship.
2023 RACP AChSHM Study Grant
Applications for the 2023 RACP AChSHM Study Grant open on Monday, 27 March 2023. The grant is valued up to $4,000 and can go towards training at an appropriate institution, supporting costs associated with research projects, or participation and presenting a paper at a conference or scientific meeting.
AChSHM Jan Edwards Prize
Applications for the AChSHM Jan Edwards Prize are now open. The Jan Edwards Prize is awarded for the best research-based oral presentation by a registered AChSHM trainee. The prize includes $500 and a certificate.

Member Health and Wellbeing Strategic Plan 2023 – 2026
We are pleased to release our new Member Health and Wellbeing Strategic Plan 2023-2026 which was developed by the Member Health and Wellbeing Committee (MHWC).
The MHWC developed the Plan using the following principles:
- The wellbeing of members is essential in all stages of their careers and lives.
- The individual, our College, and practice environments have a collective responsibility for member wellbeing.
- Wellbeing must be embedded into all College activities and culture, and modelled by leadership.
- Our College will advocate for and enable evidence-based practices to promote wellbeing.
We encourage you to read the Plan and look forward to rolling out the initiatives in the plan to better support you.

2022 MyCPD record submission deadline: 31 March
This is a friendly reminder to log in to MyCPD and complete your 2022 MyCPD submission by Friday, 31 March 2023. Please record a minimum of 100 CPD credits for last calendar year (1 January to 31 December 2022) or contact the CPD Team to discuss a CPD exemption for 2022.
Remember, your MyCPD record is open for 2023. It is recommended you record activities as you go.

Calling all AMD Basic Trainees – have a say on your training program
The Adult Medicine Division Education Committee (AMDEC) seeks expressions of interest for a Basic Trainee Representative. The AMDEC oversees the implementation of College Education Policies in the AMD Basic and Advanced Training programs.
The trainee representative is responsible for:
- providing a trainee perspective to issues of concern
- representing trainees' interests
- advocating on behalf of trainees.
