Pomegranate Ep78: The Advocate’s Journey

The core work of being a physician is demanding enough. But if you’re seeing patients come in day after day with ailments that have social determinants behind them, you may start to feel like Sisyphus; heaving that boulder up the hill only to have to start from the bottom every time it slips your grasp. Surely it would be better to change those socioeconomic drivers but where do you even begin? In fact, the three word mission statement of the RACP is Educate - Advocate – Innovate. There’s a Division of College staff dedicated to helping physicians with the strategy of putting a case to those in power.

This podcast explains how the College supports policy development and advocacy. The interviews are drawn from an RACP-produced documentary called The Advocate's Journey that was hosted by Dr Robert Lethbridge, but it’s a good time to revisit this story given how public health has become so politicised in recent times.
