The Head of Department – Medicine at Alice Springs Hospital is a senior medical leadership role responsible for leading the Department of Medicine under the direction of the Office of the Executive Director Medical Services.
The position focuses on service delivery, workforce planning, staff wellbeing, and the development of a sustainable, high-performing medical workforce while ensuring high-quality patient care across Central Australia.
The role includes 0.5 FTE dedicated to leadership and management responsibilities, with a flexible clinical component based on service needs.
The successful applicant will:
- Represent the Division of Medicine, including General Medicine and relevant subspecialties.
- Contribute to strategic planning and service development.
- Lead workforce planning and staff wellbeing initiatives.
- Support the delivery of high-quality patient care across Central Australia.
Alice Springs Hospital is a 183-bed teaching hospital affiliated with Flinders University and Charles Darwin University.
As the major referral centre for Central Australia, it serves a geographically vast region and a large population from remote Aboriginal communities.
The hospital provides a diverse and complex clinical environment with a strong focus on general medicine, chronic disease management, remote health, and culturally appropriate care.

Essential qualifications
- Eligible for general registration with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or an equivalent specialist qualification.
- Demonstrated high-level communication, interpersonal, and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Proven ability to lead and manage a medical workforce, including workforce planning, supervision, and performance management.
- Demonstrated understanding of healthcare systems, including operational and resource management in a complex clinical environment.
- Experience in clinical governance, quality improvement, and service development.
- Demonstrated commitment to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal populations and experience working in cross-cultural environments.
