Description

The Department of Health is seeking interest from a suitably qualified applicants for Staff Specialist (Geriatric Medicine) vacancies.

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania’s largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.  All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

Our Aged Care department at the Royal Hobart Hospital has 106 inpatient beds for acute older persons’ care across 3 sites in central Hobart – 60 older persons’ acute care beds, 36 subacute beds (Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM)), plus 10 beds for patients with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia requiring slow stream rehabilitation; including an additional 12 bed GEM at Home service.

There is strategic vision for an Older Person’s Emergency Department geriatrician role. The Aged Care specialists provide multiple services to inpatients (including a consultative service and shared care orthogeriatrics model of 10-20 patients) and outpatients, as well as provide a robust educational program.

Salary

  • $222,789 – $305,539 (Specialist Medical Practitioner, Level 1–11)
  • $309,222 – $319,701 (Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner, Level 1–3)

Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award, plus additional allowances and benefits.

Details

Multiple vacancies available:

  • Permanent, full-time, day work (with on-call) — up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as you are ready to join us
  • Permanent, part-time, day work (with on-call) — up to 24 hours per fortnight, commencing from October 2026
  • Fixed-term, full-time or part-time, day work (with on-call) — up to 68.4 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as you are ready to join us, until 31 March 2027

 

Essential qualifications

Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in a relevant specialty.

The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre‑employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer. The following checks are to be conducted:

  • Conviction checks in the following areas: a) Crimes of Violence b) Sex Related Offences c) Serious Drug Offences d) Crimes involving dishonesty
