Description

The Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) is facilitating a mid-term recruitment and selection process to appoint medical specialists to certain Medical Assessment Tribunals (MATs) within the Queensland workers’ compensation scheme.

The MATs are established under the Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 2003 to provide an independent and non-adversarial system of medical review and assessment of injury and impairment sustained by workers. They consist of experienced medical specialists who apply their skills and knowledge to make decisions about medical matters in workers’ compensation claims.

The MATs comprise the General Medical Assessment Tribunal (GMAT), eight Specialty Medical Assessment Tribunals (SMATs), and the Composite Medical Assessment Tribunal.

Key responsibilities

A selection panel is being convened to consider applications and recommend suitable nominees for consideration by the government and the Governor in Council. The selection panel is chaired by a former Chair of the Medical Assessment Tribunal and subject to nominations consists of other panel members who are representatives from the Australian Medical Association, Royal Australasian College of Physicians and Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

As a selection panel member, your role will be to assess each applicant based on their professional merit and reach a final decision on their suitability with other selection panel members.

The time required for reviewing applications is estimated at approximately four hours with the meeting to review the applications to take approximately 2 hours. Selection panel members will be paid a flat fee of $1,500 for their time reviewing applications and participating in the selection meeting.
