The Divisional Written Examinations Committee (WExC) – Paediatric & Child Health is responsible for the governance and oversight of the Paediatrics & Child Health written examinations. The Committee works closely with the Divisional Written Examinations (DWE) team to ensure the written examinations are valid, reliable, fair and aligned with the Basic Training curriculum.
The Committee’s key responsibilities include:
- overseeing the coordination and operational delivery of the written examinations
- convening and supporting the Paediatrics & Child Health Item Writing Panel
- developing and maintaining the examination blueprint to ensure alignment with the Basic Training Curriculum
- reviewing, approving and signing off the written examination question papers prior to delivery
- providing strategic oversight of the quality and integrity of the written assessment process
About the Chair role
The Chair provides leadership to the Committee and works in partnership with the DWE Team to ensure the successful governance and delivery of the written examinations.
In addition to chairing Committee meetings, the Chair will:
- work closely with the DWE exam on examination operations, including reviewing special consideration requests
- participate in standard setting calibration activities
- support candidate information sessions
- review psychometric analysis and examination outcomes following each examination cycle
- provide strategic advice on examination quality, governance, and continuous improvement
- represent the Committee by attending, or nominating an appropriate Committee delegate to attend:
- Paediatric & Child Health Basic Training Committee meetings, and
- College Assessment Committee meetings
Who should apply?
Fellows from across the Paediatrics & Child Health in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand, including regional and remote locations, from all specialties, and with a variety of workforce experience, are encouraged and eligible to apply for this role.
While previous experience as a member of the Paediatrics & Child Health Item Writing Panel is desirable, it's not essential.
Appointment and Succession
The successful applicant will be appointed for an initial 3-year term, with the opportunity for renewal.
To support a smooth transition, the appointment will include an additional 12-month onboarding period as Incoming Chair. During this time, the Incoming Chair will work alongside the current Chair and will:
- attend Committee meetings
- participate in Item Writing Panel meetings
- attend standard setting calibration sessions
- gain an understanding of the operational requirements and examination lifecycle managed by the DWE Team
This structured transition is designed to ensure continuity of leadership and provide the Incoming Chair with the knowledge and experience required to undertake the role confidently.
Time commitment
Applicants should be prepared to commit to the following activities each year:
- up to 4 Divisional Written Examination Committee meetings, including in-person meetings
- up to 5 College Assessment Committee meetings
- up to 5 Paediatric & Child Health Basic Training Committee meetings
- up to 2 standard setting calibration days, in-person
- up to 2 examination results panel meetings
- up to 5 candidate information sessions
- additional support for DWE operations in the lead-up to, and during, the February and October examination delivery periods
