Date published: Sep 8, 2026, 13:55 PM

Summary

The Ministry of Health seeks RACP input on its response to the NZ Royal Commission’s COVID-19 Lessons Learned report, recognising RACP’s expertise in health service impacts and pandemic preparedness.

Description

Recommendation 4A from the Phase 2 main report, which has been accepted by the Government, calls for research into:

  • how quickly services returned to pre-pandemic levels after COVID-19
  • factors that enabled some services to recover more rapidly
  • reasons why some services took longer to recover
  • health, social and educational outcomes that deteriorated during the pandemic, including impacts that may not yet be fully apparent
  • the most cost-effective interventions to restore service coverage and outcomes

The Ministry has engaged AK Research, an independent research company, to undertake this research, and has invited the College to participate.

For a balance of individual experience and wider context, expressions of interest are called for both:

  • an RACP Representative, who will be appointed by the RACP President, who can provide a broader professional perspective on behalf of the College and the profession, as appropriate
  • an RACP member as an Independent Expert to share personal experiences and practical insights, in their individual capacity

Once appointments are made, the independent Research Company will conduct interviews using videoconference via zoom/Teams or face-to-face meetings. The interviews are scheduled for October, depending on availability, and are expected to take 45 to 60 minutes.
