The Orthopaedic Knee Track of the Australian Cryoneurolysis Masterclass is a focused, hands-on cadaver workshop designed for orthopaedic surgeons, sports and exercise physicians, and senior orthopaedic registrars looking to integrate knee cryoneurolysis into their perioperative pain pathway — specifically pre- and post-TKA pain optimisation, opioid-sparing total knee arthroplasty workflows, and the management of persistent post-surgical knee pain.

The track is led by Dr Vinod Dasa MD, Professor and Vice Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, New Orleans — an internationally recognised pioneer in the clinical application of cryoneurolysis to TKA pathways: pre-operative optimisation, post-operative opioid-sparing recovery, and the management of persistent post-surgical knee pain. Dr Dasa has trained surgeons across North America, Europe, and Asia in the integration of cryoneurolysis into orthopaedic practice.

A central focus of the masterclass is the surgeon-led, anatomical-landmark-based cryoneurolysis technique Professor Dasa has refined and taught internationally — targeting the infrapatellar saphenous nerve (ISN) and anterior femoral cutaneous nerve (AFCN) using defined anatomical reference points, with optional ultrasound or fluoroscopic confirmation available for surgeons who prefer it. The technique is designed for seamless integration into the standard orthopaedic patient workflow, can be performed as an outpatient procedure in around 20–30 minutes, and is reproducible by orthopaedic surgeons whose practice has not historically included image-guided procedures. For the first time in Australia, surgeons can learn a cryoneurolysis technique that fits inside a normal orthopaedic clinic.

Built around small-group cadaver practice with a high faculty-to-participant ratio, the workshop combines concise didactic teaching with intensive hands-on time at the lab bench. Participants leave with a working understanding of patient selection, procedural technique and parameters, workflow integration, and the practical steps for establishing a cryoneurolysis service within their own practice.

The workshop is hosted at the Macquarie University Anatomy and Surgical Skills Lab (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences) — a leading Australian surgical training cadaver facility — and concludes with a networking lunch with the full masterclass faculty and the participants of the concurrent Pain & Regional Anaesthesia Track.
