In this session, we'll delve into the vital aspects of resilience and wellbeing, exploring various key topics and tools to adeptly navigate and enhance both.

It's tailored especially for basic and advanced trainees in adult medicine and paediatrics and child health. Dr Shalika Shetty will lead the discussion, joined by guest speaker Nickolas Yu.

Program

The meaning and outcomes of effective physician resilience

  • The cognitive, functional, and neurobiological components of resilience as applied to doctors.

Vicarious stress in medicine

  • Awareness of how and when this arises, and the potential effects on physicians when it occurs.
  • Strategies to respond to the impact of vicarious stress, including experiential immersion and training with tools such as mindfulness.

Understanding ‘burnout’ in healthcare

  • How to identify the elements of burnout, whether in ourselves or our teams.
  • Personalising the approach to physician burnout and utilisation of the most effective evidence-based approaches to address it.

Coaching

  • Strategies which enable valued coaching conversations to occur for both ourselves and our colleagues. This continues the conversation regarding physician resilience beyond the training day.
