New patient end support MBS items to support multidisciplinary care

What specialists need to know about new MBS items

From 1 March, 32 new Medicare Patient End Support (PES) items allow GPs, nurse practitioners (NPs) and other prescribed medical practitioners (PMPs) to claim for being physically present with your patient during video consultations.

What this means for you as a specialist

PES items can only be claimed by the patient-side provider if the specialist or consultant physician has also billed an eligible MBS video consultation item. As a consultant physician, you won't be claiming these items, but your billing of eligible video consultation will allow the GP, NP or PMP to do so.

These changes are particularly valuable for housebound patients, those in residential aged care, and rural patients who cannot travel — enabling real-time physical observations, better care coordination, and clearer communication of complex clinical information.

When a patient-side provider is present for your telehealth consultation, remember:

  • Audio-only consultations do not qualify
  • Not all specialist video items are eligible — check your specific item applies
  • A quick conversation with the patient-side provider beforehand avoids any billing confusion.
