This event will provide an update on recent clinical developments and guideline changes across Cardio‑Metabolic and Vascular Health. It is designed to bring together cardiology, endocrinology, and nephrology, hepatology and clinical pharmacology specialists for a practical exploration of the latest evidence and recommendations.

Focusing on shared systems and overlapping conditions, the program reflects the realities of clinical practice and offers structured opportunities for reflection on everyday patient care. Participants will also have the opportunity to complete CPD Category 2 and 3 activities.

By connecting specialties that frequently intersect in patient management, the event aims to foster meaningful interdisciplinary collaboration and support physicians in staying current not only within their own field, but also in related areas that directly influence patient outcomes.

Program Description

Adipose tissue: update

A/Prof Sandra Neoh, Endocrinologist
A/Prof Samantha Hocking, Endocrinologist

A/Prof Sandra Neoh and A/Prof Samantha Hocking will provide an overview of obesity as a chronic disease and cover hot topics of clinical interest, focusing on incretin mimetics.

Subclinical coronary artery disease: detection and treatment

Dr Nick Lan, Cardiologist
Prof John O'Sullivan, Cardiologist

Dr Nick Lan and Prof John O'Sullivan will discuss coronary artery disease imaging and management.

Cardiovascular disease is no longer simply a disease of the heart. Modern cardiovascular illness is increasingly driven by systemic metabolic dysfunction linked to obesity, diabetes, and inflammation. Rapid advances in diagnostics – from metabolic imaging to novel biomarkers – are revealing previously hidden mechanisms, while new therapies targeting metabolic pathways are reshaping treatment.

Framing this evolving landscape under the umbrella of Cardiometabolic Medicine better reflects the scale, complexity, and biology of contemporary cardiovascular disease, and provides a clinical framework for integrating prevention, diagnosis, and precision therapy in the metabolic era.

Metabolism below the diaphragm: renal and hepatic

Prof Angela Makris, Nephrologist
Prof Jacob George, Hepatologist

Prof Jacob George and Prof Angela Makris will share an update on the changes in renal, regarding effects of metabolism on renal outcomes.

Novel strategies and treatment targets

Dr Jay Ramanathan, Clinical Pharmacologist
A/Prof David Sullivan, Chemical Pathologist and Lipidologist

In this presentation, A/Prof David Sullivan and Dr Jay Ramanathan will cover shared pathophysiology: Insulin resistance, clustering of risk factors, multi-organ involvement, prevalence, status quo, implications, patient-centred considerations and more.

Speaker bios

Professor Jacob George

Professor Jacob George is a clinician investigator and Robert W. Storr Chair of Hepatic Medicine, University of Sydney (2007) and Head, Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Westmead Hospital (2006).

He has a proven record of delivering high impact research and teaching outcomes as well as demonstrating leadership at both national and international levels. His work spans basic and translational research on pre-cancerous liver diseases (fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis, liver fibrosis and cirrhosis) and liver cancer.

Associate Professor Samantha Hocking

Associate Professor Samantha Hocking is an endocrinologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and a clinical academic at the University of Sydney. She is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society (ANZOS) Council and is the current president of the National Association of Clinical Obesity Services (NACOS).

Associate Professor Hocking’s research interests are focused on the metabolic complications of obesity and she treats patients at the Metabolism and Obesity Service, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

She is passionate about education to improve the quality of obesity care in Australia.

Dr Nick Lan

Dr Nick Lan MBBS (Hons), MClinUS, MClinRes (Dist), MSc, FRACP is a cardiologist in the Cardiometabolic service of Fiona Stanley Hospital and Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia.

He has a clinical focus in preventive cardiology and cardiometabolic medicine, having undertaken a Clinical Fellowship in Endocrinology and Diabetes and a Masters in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine.

Nick has completed a Master of Clinical Research with Distinction and was a recipient of the WA Health Research Fellowship.

Associate Professor Sandra Neoh

Associate Professor Sandra Neoh is an endocrinologist at Northern Health and Austin Health in Melbourne, and a former Gates Cambridge scholar.

Her clinical interests include diabetes, lipidology, obesity and Aboriginal Health. She holds a number of clinical leadership positions and is the current co-chair of the Australian Atherosclerosis Society's Cardiometabolic and Vascular Medicine Council.

Professor John O’Sullivan

John O’Sullivan is a cardiologist and clinician-scientist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and The University of Sydney whose work focuses on the metabolic drivers of heart disease. His research integrates metabolic imaging, human tissue biology, and deep phenotyping to advance the emerging field of cardiometabolic medicine.

Dr Jay Ramanathan

Dr Jay Ramanathan is a physician with a background in clinical pharmacology, general medicine and geriatrics.

He has particular interest in cardio-metabolic health and quality use of medicines. He is a member of the State Formulary Committee and Medication Safety Expert Advisory Committee.

Associate Professor David Sullivan

Associate Professor David Sullivan is a physician and chemical pathologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown NSW. This includes conjoint appointment as Clinical Associate Professor, Sydney Central Clinical School.

David has an interest in lipid metabolism with emphasis on the dietary component of gene – environment interactions contributing to cardiovascular disease. He has been involved in the early use of most lipid-lowering interventions and has a particular interest in nutritional principles.

His other interest is the improvement of detection and management of inherited dyslipidaemia and associated increase in cardiovascular risk, such as occurs in Familial Hypercholesterolaemia and elevation of Lipoprotein (a) levels.

Professor Angela Makris

Professor Angela Makris is a clinician researcher, nephrologist and obstetric physician. She is the Head of Renal Services at South West Sydney Local Health District.

Professor Makris has held several leadership roles in professional societies. Her ongoing work spans basic research, clinical trials and guideline development.
