Postgraduate qualification guidelines

To apply for Stage A of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Training Program, prospective trainees must have applied for (with the intent of enrolling in and continuing) or have completed an appropriate postgraduate course at graduate diploma level or higher in occupational and environmental health or a related field deemed appropriate by the Faculty Training Committee (FTC).

The FTC recommends trainees undertake one of these options:

  1. Enrolment in a Graduate Diploma of Occupational and Environmental Health or Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

  2. Enrolment in a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health or Occupational Medicine, with a minimum of one subject in environmental health or environmental medicine.

  3. Any other postgraduate course at diploma level or higher, with a minimum subject criteria of:
    • 2 subjects in epidemiology, biostatistics or research methods
    • 1 subject in environmental health or environmental medicine
    • 3 subjects in occupational health or occupational medicine

  4. Consider extending a Graduate Diploma into a Masters degree by way of research, completed as part of the Advanced Training Research Project requirement in Stage C training.

Acceptable course subjects

The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Training Curriculum (PDF) covers these Learning Domains:

  • Clinical practice
  • Workplace hazard assessment
  • Critical appraisal of information
  • Research methods
  • Working with leaders
  • Professional qualities
  • Law and medicine
  • Fitness and return to work
  • Environmental risks and incidents

Essential content that must be covered in postgraduate coursework:

  • Occupational hazards — chemical, biological, and physical
  • Occupational risk assessment and management
  • Research methods and epidemiology
  • Occupational hygiene/assessment and control of workplace hazards
  • Occupational health and safety law
  • Environmental medicine/environmental influences on health

All essential content is not required to be completed in a single course.

Recommended electives — at least two electives are necessary but all are recommended:

  • Biostatistics
  • Ergonomics
  • Environmental medicine/environmental influences on health
  • Occupational health and safety management
  • Toxicology
  • Professional writing
  • Organisation behaviour/management/psychology
