DCE Attempt Limit Changes

Overview

From 2027, the maximum number of attempts at the Divisional Clinical Examination (DCE) will increase from 3 to 4.

This change applies to current Divisional Basic Trainees who have not yet exhausted their DCE attempts. It provides an additional opportunity while maintaining examination standards and existing training requirements.

What's changing?

From 2027:

  • The maximum number of DCE attempts will increase from 3 to 4.
  • This applies to current Divisional Basic Trainees who have not yet exhausted their DCE attempts, including those who have undertaken, or will undertake, a third DCE attempt from the May/June 2026 examination period.
  • This change does not apply to individuals who have already exited the Basic Training program.

What's not changing?

  • The standard required to pass the DCE
  • The maximum number of DWE attempts (remains at 4)
  • All exam attempts must continue to be completed within the Basic Training time limit, in accordance with the Progression Through Training Policy (PDF)

Why is this changing?

This change has been made in response to feedback on the progression impacts of the current attempt limit, and reflects consideration of trainee experience, equity, and workforce participation.

It also aligns the DCE attempt limit with the DWE, which permits 4 attempts.

What this means for trainees

This change gives eligible trainees access to 1 additional DCE attempt if they are unsuccessful within the current limit.

It does not change expectations about readiness. Trainees should continue to plan their attempt based on their level of preparation and aim to sit when they are appropriately ready.

Support available

Trainees are encouraged to discuss their examination readiness and timing with their Supervisor and Director of Physician/Paediatric Education (DPE), seek feedback early if they are unsuccessful, and use available College resources and local supports to guide preparation.

The Training Support Unit is also available to assist trainees throughout their examinations and can be contacted at :

The RACP Support Program offers free, 24/7 confidential support.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Does this change apply to me?

This change applies if you're a current Divisional Basic Trainee who has not yet exhausted your DCE attempts. This includes trainees who have undertaken, or will undertake, a third DCE attempt from the May/June 2026 exam period. It does not apply to individuals who have already exited the Basic Training program.

Do I need to change my exam plans?

No. This change provides an additional opportunity, but it does not change expectations about readiness. You should continue to plan your attempt based on your level of preparation and advice from your Supervisor or the Director of Physician/Paediatric Education (DPE).

Does an extra attempt change the standard for passing?

No. The standard required to pass the DCE is unchanged. The exam assesses the same level of competence at every sitting.

Should I delay my attempt because I now have more attempts available?

No. Decisions about when to attempt the DCE should be based on readiness, not timing. You should continue to aim to sit when you are appropriately prepared.

What support is available?

Support is available through your Supervisor and the Director of Physician/Paediatric (DPE), who can help you assess readiness and plan your preparation. The College also provides support through the RACP Support Program, which offers free, 24/7 confidential support, and the Training Support Unit, which can assist with guidance and support during your exams.

What should I do if I am unsuccessful?

You should seek feedback as early as possible and discuss next steps with your Supervisor or DPE. Early support and a clear preparation plan are important for future attempts.
