AFOEM President's Awards
Nominations for 2027 open on 1 September and close 30 November 2026.
The Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) President’s Awards recognise the outstanding contributions made by Fellows and trainees to the Faculty.
There are 3 award categories:
- education, training and assessment — Fellows or trainees who have contributed significantly to AFOEM’s education, training and assessment programs
- policy and advocacy — Fellows or trainees who have contributed to AFOEM’s policy and advocacy
- trainee commitment — trainees who have shown an outstanding commitment to AFOEM’s education and training program

Dr Peter Sharman | Policy and Advocacy
Dr Peter Sharman began his occupational medicine career as the on-site doctor for Hydro Tasmania’s West Coast construction projects after completing his medical qualifications at the University of Adelaide in 1980. He later moved into a managerial role in workplace health and safety with Hydro Tasmania and, during this time, gained his Fellowship in Occupational and Environmental Medicine under the mentorship of Dr Martin Bicevskis. In the 1990s, he established his own rehabilitation management business and has since worked as a consultant occupational physician in Hobart.
Dr Sharman is currently the Tasmanian Representative on the AFOEM Federal Council and a member of the Tasmanian Health Senate. He is passionate about strengthening training pathways for the next generation of occupational and environmental medicine specialists in Tasmania. As President of the Tasmanian Foundation for Occupational Medicine, he has advocated to government and private organisations on the value of occupational and environmental medicine and has recently joined the Global Occupational and Environmental Medicine Advocacy Group. He also writes the blog Insult & Injury, which explores system issues relevant to occupational and environmental medicine practice.

Dr Jomini Cheong | Trainee Commitment
Dr Cheong is an experienced Occupational Medical Practitioner and Pharmacist. He is a CASA DAME, Rail AHP, and accredited MRO. He is the Chief Medical Officer for Fire Rescue Victoria and Senior Police Medical Officer for Victoria Police.
Past experience includes DVA and community GP practice, and he is currently the ANZSOM VIC/TAS Chair. He has developed subjects and taught in the field of Pharmacotherapeutics at The University of Melbourne and Monash University.
Dr Cheong is passionate about integrating the fields of medicine and risk management, utilising technology and evidence to support organisations in the proactive optimisation of worker health. His personal life is a fulfilling one, and he spends his days tinkering with 3D printers and playing TCGs with his wife and three children.
Dr Joseph Slesenger | Education, Training and Assessment
Eligibility
A nominee must be a registered Fellow or active Advanced Trainee of the AFOEM, nominated by a registered Fellow or active Advanced Trainee of the AFOEM.
Nominees are ineligible if they:
- submit a nomination on their own behalf
- have received a President’s Award within the last 3 years
Prize
Recipients of the AFOEM President’s Awards will each receive an AUD$300 gift card and award presented at an AFOEM annual event in 2027.

Nominations must be submitted in a single PDF file, including:
- a nomination form
- 2 x letters of support from referees

Selection process
An Award Review Panel, comprised of the AFOEM President and selected Fellows will review all nominations.
The AFOEM reserves the right not to make an award in any or all categories if all nominations received don’t meet a sufficiently high standard.
