The Faculty Assessment Committee (FAC) seeks EOIs from AFOEM Fellows who are interested in observing the AFOEM Stage B Practical with the view to becoming a registered Examiners for future assessments

Description

The AFOEM Stage B Practical Examination will be delivered on Saturday 14 November– Sunday 15 November 2026, subject to final candidate numbers (venue TBC). We are looking for interested AFOEM Fellows to observe the exam. To view more information about the examination, please visit the website.

Observers are Fellows who have had no previous involvement in the examining process. Their role is to learn the fundamentals of examining by observing a cross-section of station types and examining pairs. They observe the conduct of the station and the examiner consensus discussion. Each observer will be provided with a roster of stations and times for their observation.

Voluntarily dedicating your time and expertise to participating in the examinations can earn you Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits.

About you

To be a successful applicant, you must:

  • have unconditional AHPRA or MCNZ registration as an occupational and environmental medicine physician
  • have practiced a minimum of two (2) years following qualification.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Attend the examiner calibration meeting preceding the examination to learn about the calibration and examination day processes and the expectations of being an examiner.
  2. Observe, without interference, a representative sample of examiners and candidates during the AFOEM Stage B Practical Examination, across all question types, in accordance with the schedule provided.
  3. Take note of the examination process, examiner techniques and the post-session examiners discussion leading to final consensus scoring.
  4. Attend the post-examination debrief session with the Lead Coordinator to provide feedback on the process and address any questions ahead of participation in the next examination as a Provisional Examiner.

Register of Examiners

Appointment to the role of Examiner at the AFOEM Stage B Practical Examination is conditional on Fellows attending their first examination as an Observer.

Once Fellows have observed an examination, they are invited to participate as a Provisional Examiner under the guidance of an experienced examiner. Subject to endorsement by their co-examiner, the observing Quality Assurer and the FAC Chair, Fellows become a registered examiner for the AFOEM practical examinations.

FRACP Examiners do not need to complete the 1 year of observance but will participate as a co-examiner alongside an experienced AFOEM Examiner.

Please note: as spots are limited for observing the 2026 examination, you may be invited to observe in 2027 or thereafter, if your application is successful.
