Letter on an iceberg

On 4 June 2021, Te ra tika o te hauora hapori | The New Zealand Medical Journal published an open letter by the Māori Health Committee (Dr Cheri Hotu, Dr Sandra Hotu, Dr Dawn Adair, Dr Danny De Lore, Dr Clarence Kerrison, Dr George Laking, Dr Myra Ruka, Dr Kennedy Sarich, Dr Jade Tamatea, Dr Tane Taylor and Dr Matthew Wheeler) of the RACP. The letter is open access and addresses pro-equity and anti-racism in the health sector.

“Building cultural safety into clinical practice can be uncomfortable and confronting as it involves reflecting on one’s own personal biases, power and privilege, and at times having to challenge our colleagues and the structures which shape our clinical practice. Culturally safe health practice in Aotearoa requires specific training and a Te Tiriti-principled framework for assessment and review.”
