AFRM News – April 2025
If you are anything like me, you are still trying to catch up on your work after the Easter break. So this is a brief message highlighting some items.
No doubt you are all aware that the Rehabilitation Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand 8th Annual Scientific Meeting in conjunction with New Zealand Rehabilitation Association (RMSANZ NZRA 2025) is being held in Christchurch from Sunday, 20 to Wednesday, 23 July and registration is now open. It will be a great opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new friends, and expand your knowledge, while enjoying a very beautiful part of the world. If you have not already registered, the link to the ASM website is
here.
We have been receiving feedback about the new curriculum and the new assessment processes for trainees commencing in 2025. A webinar specifically for AFRM supervisors to learn about the new curriculum and changes to assessment requirements is in the process of being arranged. The details are still being finalised but please keep a look out for the details regarding this upcoming webinar. It will be a very useful session for supervisors to understand the new requirements and processes – I know I will be watching. Just noting that there are also curriculum/assessment resources available for supervisors on
Medflix that can be viewed at any time.
Finally, you may or may not have seen the most recent RACP President’s message. In that message, the President notes that the RACP Board is recommending changes to the constitution and College governance. These include changes to the role of the RACP President, and changes to the board membership and selection processes. There will be discussion opportunities after the upcoming AGM on Friday, 30 May and explanatory notes of the proposed changes are being prepared. It is important that you make yourself aware of the changes and consider their potential impact – both positive and negative. And then, of course, when the changes are put to a vote later in the year, it is important for you to vote.

Bi-National Rehabilitation Position Statement
The Working Group met on Wednesday, 19 March 2025 to review a draft scaffolding document, as one of the first important steps in developing a robust and evidence-based position statement. Following member comment, further development of the draft scaffolding document will be completed. Members are planning to get together at a workshop at the RMSANZ NZRA 2025 conference in Christchurch in July to continue key conversations about this significant work.
