New Years Honours 2026

Professor Roderick (Rod) MacLeod (MNZM)

We offer our congratulations to Professor Roderick (Rod) MacLeod (MNZM) who was recognised in this year’s Honours, being made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to palliative care.

Professor MacLeod contributed to hospice and palliative care for more than 35 years in both Australia and New Zealand and retired from clinical practice in 2019 following what has been a successful career. He was awarded an MNZM (Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit) in the 2015 Honours.

He holds an honorary position with the University of Auckland’s School of Population Health and continues to contribute to academia. He was Co-Editor in Chief of the major reference work ‘The Textbook of Palliative Care’ (2019 and 2024) and was Clinical Advisor to the Hospice New Zealand Board from 2020 to 2022 as well as chairing various committees.

Professor MacLeod also co-authored the international award-winning cookbook ‘Lobster for Josino – fabulous food for our final days’ (2018).

Mark your calendars! We're excited to announce that Te Rā o Ngā Tauira Mahi o Aotearoa New Zealand 2026 | Aotearoa New Zealand Trainees' Day will be held on Friday, 28 and Saturday, 29 August 2026 at the QT Queenstown.

This Trainees' Day will provide you with the support and resources you need during your Basic Training or Advanced Training journey. Designed with you in mind, the two-day program will feature interactive workshops and networking with your peers.
