Research Establishment Fellowships

Applications for 2021 funding closed Monday 29 June 2020.
Submissions are currently under review and a decision is anticipated by late November. All applicants will be notified by early December.

Research Establishment Fellowships are available to Fellows and trainees who wish to establish themselves in a research career. To be eligible, Fellows and trainees must meet one of the two criteria:

  • you're within 7 years of having completed a Masters, PhD or equivalent higher research degree
  • you hold a research higher degree and be within 2 years of returning from working or studying overseas for a period of more than 12 months

Funding provided by most of the awards can be used for:

  • stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short-term Research Assistant appointment

Note: Applicants who hold NHMRC, MRFS or other Category 1 funding, which would be held concurrently with an RACP Fellowship, will be given lower priority when considered for RACP funding.


Barbara Cameron Australian Rheumatology Association Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To promote and encourage research into the cause and treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Applicants need to demonstrate the project’s capacity for knowledge transfer to professionals and patients.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP or members of the Australian Rheumatology Association.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas.
Special Requirement: If the applicant is not a RACP member, then a person in their research team must be.

The Fellowship is supported through a bequest of the late Barbara Cameron and co-administered by the Australian Rheumatology Association.

Fellows Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To encourage and support research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Value: Up to AUD$75,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is supported by contributions made by RACP Life Fellows.

RACP Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To encourage and support the promotion of research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowships are supported by contributions from RACP members.

RACP MAIC Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To promote research capacity and capability to improve knowledge on:

  • medical conditions or illnesses which cause or contribute to motor vehicle accidents (MVAs)
  • medical treatments or approaches that improve health outcomes for people involved in MVAs
  • rehabilitation of people who sustain a temporary or permanent disability through MVAs
  • improving longer term outcomes of people injured in MVAs including pain management, community re-integration, psychosocial, mental health and vocational outcomes

Value: Up to AUD$50,000 per annum for 2 years.
Eligibility: Australian Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Queensland only.
The exception to this is if an applicant can demonstrate a benefit to the state of Queensland from the research being undertaken elsewhere in Australia.
Reporting requirements: The Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) requires a final report that outlines how the outcome of the research contributes towards lessening the risk of MVA injuries, and/or improving the outcomes of people injured in MVAs.

The Fellowship is supported through a grant from the Queensland Motor Accident Insurance Commission matched with funds from the RACP.

The Jacquot Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To assist establishment of a career in nephrology research for a nephrologist who has completed a research higher degree in an area of relevance. Research may be either basic or clinical. The award can be used for:

  • stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short-term Research Assistant appointment
  • assist with travel and re-establishment costs for those taking up a postdoctoral fellowship overseas

Value: Up to AUD$90,000 per annum.
Eligibility: Nephrologists who are Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas.

The Fellowship is supported by the Estate of the late Don and Lorraine Jacquot and co-administered with the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN).

Cottrell Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: For research or training in the areas of epidemiology, social or community medicine or for research or training relating to areas of special relevance to the Asia-Pacific area.
Value: Up to AUD$75,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas.
Special requirement: Applicants should highlight the relevance of the project to epidemiology, social or community medicine, or the Asia-Pacific region.

The Fellowship is supported through a bequest of the late Dr Jack Dinham Cottrell.

The Sir Roy McCaughey Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Value: Up to AUD$75,000.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: New South Wales only.

The Fellowship is supported through a bequest of the late Sir Roy McCaughey.

The Robert Maple-Brown Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To encourage and support the promotion of research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Value: Up to AUD$60,000.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is supported through the generosity of The Maple-Brown Family Charitable Foundation Ltd, in memory of the late Mr Robert Maple-Brown AO.

Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in the area of diseases associated with ageing and to promote leadership and community spirit within the profession and the community.
Value: Up to AUD$60,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows or Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas.
Special requirements: Applicants must submit —

  • in addition to academic merit, a brief summary demonstrating their community involvement, integrity of character and leadership qualities within the community and/or the profession
  • 2 x confidential referee reports regarding their character, community involvement and leadership qualities

RACP Diabetes Australia Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To promote clinical and basic research into the causes, prevention and treatment of diabetes.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas.

The Fellowship is supported through a donation from Diabetes Australia Research Trust, matched by funds from the RACP Foundation.

RACP Endocrine Society of Australia Research Establishment Fellowship in Endocrinology

Purpose: To further research in endocrinology.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters, who are members of the Endocrine Society of Australia.
Tenable: Australia only.

The Fellowship is supported through a grant from the Endocrine Society of Australia, matched with funds from the RACP Foundation.

RACP/Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in the fields of blood pressure, hypertension and associated cardiovascular diseases. The research may be either basic or clinical but preference will be given to research relevant to new clinical developments.

Funding is primarily to provide stipend support. Use of a proportion of the funds will be considered for:

  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short-term Research Assistant appointment

Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Fellows and trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.

The Fellowship is supported through a grant from the Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research, matched with funds from the RACP Foundation.

The Servier Staff 'Barry Young' Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in the field of oncology and the prevention and cure of cancer.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas.

The Fellowship is supported through a grant from Servier Laboratories in honour of former Managing Director, the late Mr Barry A. Young OAM FRACP (Hon), matched with funds from the RACP Foundation.

RACP AFRM Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in an area of rehabilitation medicine in the management of functional loss, activity limitation or participation restriction arising out of illness and injury.
Value: AUD$50,000 for 1 year
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (AFRM).
Tenable: Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Fellowship is supported by the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine Endowment Fund.

RACP Bayer Australia Medical Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in cardiovascular, anti-infective and metabolic medicine.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is supported through a donation from Bayer Australia Ltd, matched with funds from the RACP Foundation.

Croxon Research Establishment Fellowship for Alzheimer's Disease Research

Purpose: For research or training into the causes, prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.
Value: Up to AUD$75,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is supported by a bequest from the late Alfred Croxon.

RACP Australian Rheumatology Association & D.E.V Starr Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research into the field of rheumatic diseases.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters or members of the Australian Rheumatology Association.
Special requirement: If the applicant is not a RACP member, then a person in their research team must be.
Tenable: Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is supported through a donation from the Australian Rheumatology Association, matched with funds from the RACP Foundation and a bequest from D.E.V. Starr.

RACP GlaxoSmithKline Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further medical research in the areas of respiratory medicine, vaccine-preventable disease and/or oncology. Preference will be given to research with relevance to Indigenous health.
Value: Up to AUD$50,000 for 1 year.
Eligibility: Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP's Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.

The Fellowship is supported through a grant from GlaxoSmithKline Australia, matched with funds from the RACP Foundation.

The Kids' Cancer Project Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To support physician-scientists specialising in paediatric oncology and to encourage research to:

  • increase capacity for bench to bedside medicine
  • minimise harmful impacts of treatment
  • improve quality of life and function post treatment
  • improve survival and ultimately find cures for childhood cancer

Value: Up to $90,000 per annum for 2 years.
