Research Establishment Fellowships

These Fellowships are available to Fellows and trainees who wish to establish themselves in a research career, and who are either within seven years of having completed a Masters, PhD or equivalent higher research degree; or who have a research higher degree and are within two years of returning from working or studying overseas.

Barbara Cameron Australian Rheumatology Association (ARA) Research Establishment Fellowship 

Purpose: To promote and encourage research into the cause and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and education of both professionals and patients. 
​​Value: Up to $50,000
Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters or members of the ARA.
T​enable: Australia, New Zealand or overseas. 
Special Requirement: If the applicant is not a member of the RACP, a member of the research team must be member. 

The Fellowship is made available by a bequest of the late Barbara Cameron and jointly administered by the RACP and the Australian Rheumatology Association.

Bayer Australia Medical Research Establishment Fellowship

​Purpose: To further research in ​cardiovascular, anti-infective and metabolic medicine. Funding to be used for to:

  • ​provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

​V​alue: Up to $50,000 for one year
Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters
Tenable: Australia, New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is made available by a donation from Bayer Australia Ltd matched with funds from the RACP.

Cottrell Research Establishment Fellowship

P​urpose: For research or training in the areas of epidemiology, social or community medicine; or for research or training relating to areas of special relevance to the Asia Pacific area.
Funding to be used to:

  • ​provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment ​

V​alue: Up to $75,000 for one year.
Eligibility: Australia and New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
T​enable: Australia, New Zealand and overseas Special requirement: Applicants should highlight the relevance of the project to epidemiology, social or community medicine, or the Asia Pacific region.   

The Fellowship is made available by a bequest of the late Dr Jack Dinham Cottrell.

Diabetes Australia Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To promote clinical and basic research into the causes, prevention and treatment of diabetes. Funding to be used to:

  • ​provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment​

​Value: Up to $50,000 for one year
​Eligibility:  Australia and New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters
Tenable: Australia, New Zealand and overseas

The Fellowship is made available by a donation from Diabetes Australia Research Trust which is matched by a contribution from the RACP.

RACP Endocrine Society of Australia (ESA) Research Establishment Fellowship in Endocrinology

Purpose: To further research in endocrinology. Funding to be used to:  

  • provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

Value: up to $50,000 for one year
Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and Advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters who are members of ESA.
T​enable: Australia

The Fellowship is made available by a grant from the Endocrine Society of Australia, matched with funds provided by Fellows of the RACP.

Fellows Research Establishment Fellowship

P​urpose: The intent of the scholarship is to encourage and support the promotion of research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.

  • provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

​Value: Up to $75,000 for one year
​Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
​Tenable: Australia, New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is made available by donations from the Fellows of the RACP.

The Jacquot Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To assist establishment of a career in nephrology research for a nephrologist who has completed a research higher degree in an area of relevance. The award may be used for:

  • ​stipend
  • ​other support such as laboratory set-up costs or short term Research Assistant appointment.
  • ​assist with travel and re-establishment costs for those taking up a post-doctoral fellowship overseas

​Value: Up to $90,000 per annum. 
Recipients are eligible to apply for continuation of funding for up to three years but must demonstrate significant progress in their subsequent application.
​Eligibility: Nephrologists who are Fellows and trainees of the RACP wish to further their studies in the treatment and control of renal disease in a university, hospital or research centre.

The Kids' Cancer Project Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To foster the growth of physician-scientists specialising in paediatric oncology and increase capacity for bench to bedside medicine, ultimately funding cures for childhood cancer. The Fellowship provides stipend support only.
Value: Up to $90,000 per annum for 2 years
Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and Advanced Trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters

RACP Research Establishment Fellowship

RACP AFRM Research Establishment Fellowship

​Purpose: To further an area of research in an area of rehabilitation medicine in the management of functional loss, activity limitation or participation restriction arising out of illness and injury. Funding to be used to provide:

  • stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

​Value: $50,000 for one year
​Eligibility: Australian or New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of AFRM

RACP/Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research Establishment Fellowship

​Purpose: To further research in the fields of blood pressure, hypertension and associated cardiovascular diseases. The research may be either basic or clinical but preference will be given to research relevant to new clinical developments. Funding is provided to:

  • primarily provide stipend support

Use of a proportion of the funds will be considered for:

  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

Value: Up to $50,000 for one year

The Fellowship is made available by a grant from the then Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research, matched with funds provided by Fellows of the RACP. 

The Robert Maple-Brown Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: The intent of the scholarship is to encourage and support the promotion of research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters. The fund may be used:

  • to provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

V​alue: Up to $​60,000
​Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters
Tenable: Australia, New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is made available due to the generosity of The Maple-Brown Family Charitable Foundation Ltd in memory of Robert Maple-Brown AO.

The Robert Maple-Brown Research Establishment Fellowship in Haematology

​Purpose: To further haematological research. Funding to be used to:

  • provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

​Value: Up to $60,000
​Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters

Note: If ​all applications are considered by the GAC to not be of a sufficiently high standard, an award will not be made in the field of haematological research but the Fellowship may be offered to a reserve candidate of sufficiently high standard for the Fellows Research Establishment Fellowship.

The Sir Roy McCaughey Fellowship (Research Establishment)

Purpose: To further research in any area of medicine. Funding to be used ​to:

  • provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

Value: Up to $75,000 
​Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters

The Fellowship is made available by a bequest of the late Sir Roy McCaughey.

The Servier Staff "Barry Young" Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research in the field of oncology and the prevention and cure of cancer; 
and to:

  • provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

Value: Up to $50,000 for one year.
​Eligibility: Australia and New Zealand Fellows and advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters
​Tenable: Australia, New Zealand and overseas.

The Fellowship is made available by a grant from Servier Laboratories to honour the former Managing Director, the late Mr Barry A Young OAM FRACP (Hon) and funds from the Fellows of the RACP.

Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation Research Fellowship

​Purpose: To further research in the area of diseases associated with ageing, and to promote leadership and community spirit within the profession and the community. Funding to be used to:

  • provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

​Value: Up to $60,000 for one year.
​Eligibility: Australia and New Zealand Fellows or advanced trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters. 
Tenable: Australia, New Zealand and overseas.
Special requirement: Applicants for this Fellowship should seek confidential reports from two referees on the applicant's character, community involvement and leadership qualities. In addition to academic merit, applicants will be expected to have demonstrated community involvement, integrity of character and leadership qualities within the community and/or the profession. Applicants should include a brief outline of their leadership in the profession and the community.

The Fellowship is made available by a grant from the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation, matched with funds provided by the RACP.

RACP Australian Rheumatology Association (ARA) & DEV Starr Research Establishment Fellowship

Purpose: To further research into the field of rheumatic diseases.
Value: Up to $50,000
Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters or members of the ARA. If the applicant is not a member of the RACP, a member of the research team must be a member.
​Tenable: Australia, New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is made available by a donation from the Australian Rheumatology Association, matched with funds provided by Fellows of the RACP, plus capital from the bequest of DEV Starr. 

Croxon Research Establishment Fellowship for Alzheimer's Disease Research

​Purpose: For research or training into the causes, prevention and treatment Alzheimer's Disease. Funding to be used to:

  • provide stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

Value: Up to $75,000 for one year.
​Eligibility: Australian and New Zealand Fellows and trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
​Tenable: Australia, New Zealand or overseas.

The Fellowship is made available by a bequest of the late Alfred Croxon

New Zealand Fellows Research Establishment Fellowship

​Purpose: To encourage and support the promotion of research in any medical specialty areas represented by the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters. Funding to be used to provide:

  • stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

​Value: Up to NZ$75,000.
​Eligibility: New Zealand Fellows and trainees of the RACP, its Divisions, Faculties and Chapters.
​Tenable: Australia, New Zealand and overseas.
Special Conditions: The successful applicant will be requested to publicise the award through speaking engagements and participation at College events.

RACP GlaxoSmithKline Research Establishment Fellowship

​Purpose: To further medical research in the areas of respiratory medicine, vaccine-preventable disease and/or oncology. Preference will be given to research with relevance to indigenous health. The Fellowship may provide:

  • stipend support
  • other support such as laboratory set-up costs
  • a short term Research Assistant appointment

​Value: Up to $50,000 for one year.
