The RACP has released a landmark statement providing concrete steps the health system and healthcare workers can take to improve the health of Indigenous children in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

The RACP is committed to Indigenous health equity and creating a culturally safe specialist workforce as set out in our Indigenous Strategic Framework, and are proud to release an inaugural statement on Indigenous Child Health in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand (PDF).

The RACP has worked closely with Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Māori people to develop a statement that sets the standard of what is required to meet the health needs of Indigenous children in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.

The statement calls on health professionals in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand to:

  • learn the colonial history of your country
  • recognise the strength and resilience of Māori, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities
  • understand how privilege and institutional racism operates within healthcare systems and be open to naming it

Learn more about the statement from the Chair of the Working Group, paediatrician Dr Danny de Lore.
