How does the RACP Accelerated Specialist Pathway compare with the Medical Board of Australia’s expedited pathway?
Both pathways are designed for international specialists whose training and experience are assessed as substantially comparable to Australian standards.
They share important features, including requirements for supervised practice, orientation to the Australian healthcare system, and cultural safety training to support safe, effective integration.
A key difference is scope. The Medical Board of Australia’s expedited pathway is currently limited to General Medicine and General Paediatrics for applicants from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. In contrast, the RACP Accelerated Specialist Pathway supports a broader range of specialties and includes eligible applicants from the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, India, Hong Kong, and Sri Lanka, offering greater flexibility for many specialists.
The RACP also brings significant experience and proven success. Our specialist assessment program for overseas trained specialists has been running for over 30 years, giving applicants confidence in a well-established process. Since 2022 alone, we've processed over 1,000 specialist assessment applications.
As part of meeting Medical Board of Australia’s requirements, overseas trained specialists undertaking supervised practice must nominate a CPD Home.
The RACP welcomes being nominated as your CPD Home, and this provides added value through inclusive access to our MyCPD platform for recording activities and to the RACP Online Learning Hub. These resources are included in the workplace-based assessment fees for those in the RACP pathway, helping simplify compliance and support learning.
Applicants using the Medical Board of Australia’s expedited pathway will need to choose and pay separately for a CPD Home subscription if they wish to access similar services.
What also sets our program apart is the level of dedicated support offered throughout the process. The Accelerated Specialist Pathway is designed and overseen by experienced Fellows who understand what specialist practice in Australia requires.
Applicants receive personalised guidance with a dedicated Case Officer, tailored resources, a structured support program, and access to an OTP peer forum. This approach helps simplify a complex process and ensures specialists feel supported at every stage of their journey to specialist recognition and practice in Australia.
Our goal is to help you transition into specialist practice confidently, efficiently, and with the professional support you deserve.
