Essential update: 2024 CPD requirements for trainees
Date published:
29 May 2024
As the landscape of medical education evolves, so do the requirements for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The Medical Board of Australia (MBA) has introduced new CPD requirements for all medical practitioners from January 2024. All Australian-based medical trainees will need to comply with the new CPD requirements from January 2024.
What does this mean for you?
I will continue training in 2024
If you are actively training in a Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) Training Program in Australia, this will inherently satisfy the new CPD requirements. No action is needed by you as the RACP will manage all administration and regulatory reporting on your behalf to maintain your compliance. This includes trainees who are training with an interruption of less than six months and trainees working part-time.
I will be taking an interruption in training for six months or more
If you are taking six or more months of interruption from training, and you don’t meet the MBA exemption criteria, you need to nominate a CPD Home and meet the CPD requirements. Exemptions apply for parental or carer leave, serious illness or other approved circumstances as per the MBA Registration Standard.
RACP is your natural CPD Home
RACP trainees on interruption (for more than six months) can nominate the RACP for a nominal annual fee of $530. Button/Hyperlink – Nominate the RACP as your MyCPD home. This annual fee directly supports MyCPD administration, meaning you will have access to the RACP tracking system as well as support and guidance on your CPD requirements during long periods of interruption. You can continue to access online learning including the College Learning Series.
What do you need to do?
If interrupting your training for six or more months in 2024, be proactive. Review the CPD requirements as set by the Medical Board of Australia and the 2024 MyCPD Framework for more information. Applications for Interruption of Training can be submitted until the deadline on 15 February 2024. Our CPD team will then be in touch if your planned interruption is more than six months.
