Dear trainees and Fellows,

The Board met in Sydney last week and continued its work on education, training, professional support and advocacy – the main business of the College.

We also focused on the College's response to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) regulatory requirements, specifically their requests to improve our governance and communication to members. Our aim is to ensure the College is governed well and acts in the best interests of both Fellows and trainees.

Australian Medical Council accreditation condition

The Board approved a plan that responded to an additional accreditation condition imposed by the AMC that required improved governance. A lot of this improvement work was already underway including Director induction, roles for Board and management, and most importantly, they stressed educating and informing the members about what constitutes good governance. We agree this is crucial for the future.

Statement of expectations for directors

The Board approved a new Statement of Expectations for Directors to replace the former Code of Conduct. This supports the College's response to the SafeWork NSW Improvement Notice and reflects our commitment to a safe, respectful and effective workplace. It reinforces respectful debate, constructive challenge, collective decision-making and the duties of Board service.

Governance reform working party

The Board also approved the establishment of a Governance Reform Working Party to guide the next phase of governance reform requested by all three regulators.  Its work will consider the roles and relationships of the Board, College Council and other governing bodies; governance committee structures and ways to simplify governance. The Working Party will consult with you, the members, widely. The Board is committed to ensuring any future proposals are informed by evidence, contemporary practice and real member engagement before any recommendations are finalised. Constitutional change will be driven by you, the members. 

Looking ahead

The Board recognises that rebuilding trust and confidence requires time, consistency and sustained effort. We are encouraged by the progress being made and remain committed to stronger governance, a positive organisational culture, and a College that is well placed to meet its responsibilities to Fellows, trainees and the communities we serve.
