Supervision

Basic Trainee Supervisors

There are a number of roles involved in the new Basic Training programs. You can find detailed information on each role and their responsibilities in the relevant Handbooks and Curricula, under ‘Roles and responsibilities’.

Directors of Physician/Paediatric Education (DPE) and Training Program Coordinators (TPC)

A Director of Physician/Paediatric Education is a Fellow who provides educational leadership across a training setting. This includes fostering a link between the RACP and a training setting.

Training program coordinators (TPC) is an admin support role which will mirror DPE viability of trainees. TPCs will be able to approve training applications and view all training requirements.

Approval

Basic Training

DPEs and/or Training Program Coordinators need to approve applications for entry into training. See the Setting/Network DPE/TPC guide on how to approve an application (PDF) for more information. The process is as follows:

  • receive a TMP-generated email notification once a trainee applies for Basic Training at your setting.
  • log into TMP and navigate to 'My assigned actions'. You or your Training Program Coordinator (TPC) can review trainees' applications and approve, decline or request more information.
  • medical education staff assigned a TPC role are granted access to trainee TMP records to support the functions of the DPE.
Education Supervisors
  • Basic Trainees must nominate an Education Supervisor (ES) and a Rotation Supervisor (RS) for their training in TMP. If the RS is not known, the trainee can submit the plan without it and update it later.
  • Supervisors will receive an email notification once nominated by a trainee.
Being nominated

Supervisors will:

  • receive a TMP generated email notification when nominated as a supervisor by a trainee in a rotation plan
  • need to log into TMP and navigate to 'My assigned actions' to review and accept, or decline, the supervisor nomination
  • have access to individual trainee records while they're nominated as a trainees Supervisor in TMP

Advanced Trainee Supervisors

  • Advanced Trainees must nominate 2 Rotation Supervisors in their rotation plan before submitting it.
  • Supervisors will receive notifications and must approve or decline their nomination.
  • Supervisors will only have access to a trainee’s record while they are assigned as their supervisor.

Educator roles in TMP

Network/setting DPE roles will be automatically linked to their relevant training program settings. DPEs will review and approve a trainee’s application but they won't have full oversight of the trainee’s records until the trainee has completed and submitted their rotation plan.

Training Program Coordinator (TPC) roles in TMP have been assigned to Medical education staff (supporting Basic Training programs) to allow access to trainee TMP records to support the functions of the DPE.

DPEs should contact BasicTraining@racp.edu.au or basic.training@racp.org.nz if they need a TPC role assigned.

Education supervisor and Rotation supervisor roles are created once a trainee has nominated the user as a supervisor in TMP. Supervisors will only have access to trainee records while they are nominated as a trainee's supervisor in TMP. Access will cease 60 days after the rotation end date.
