    Trainee orientation resource

These resources are designed to provide trainees the information they need to get started with their training journey using the new curricula. Trainees should aim to complete this learning resource within the first 6 months of training:

    Entry into training program

    Application

First year trainees starting Advanced Training programs in 2025 need to apply for entry into the relevant training program through TMP. Trainees need to demonstrate (and provide evidence where applicable) that they have met the program entry criteria.

Trainees can submit rotation plans and nominate their supervisors in TMP while waiting for approval of their entry application.

    Approval

Entry applications for Advanced Training will be approved by our staff or the relevant overseeing committee. Advanced Trainees who started any of the 6 selected programs in 2024 don't need to submit an entry application if they're continuing training in 2025, however they'll need to submit rotation plan(s) for the 2025 training year.

    Nominating supervisors

Advanced Trainees should navigate to the ‘Training plan’ tab in TMP to:

    • nominate 2 Rotation Supervisors in the rotation plan before submitting
    • update any changes in supervisor details in the rotation plan
    Important dates
    Item 2025 requirements Submission deadline
    Application form 1
    • Due 28 February for annual intake
    • Due 31 August for mid-year intake
    Rotation plan 1 per rotation
    • Due 28 February for rotations in the first half of the year
    • Due 31 August for rotations in the second half of the year

For further information on the program-specific requirements including work-based assessments and their respective submission deadlines, please refer to the appropriate Advanced Training specialty curriculum.

    Program-level requirements

Program-level requirements are specialty-specific learning activities or assessments that aren't standard across all training programs. These can include a Research Project, Logbooks, and Learning Themes.

    Research Project

The Research Project is a work-based assessment that involves undertaking a research or quality improvement project during Advanced Training.

    • For detailed instructions and assessment criteria, refer to the relevant Advanced Training curricula and the Advanced Training research project guidelines (PDF).
    • How to submit: Trainees can submit their project through TMP under program level requirements on the Assessment requirements tab.
    • Outcome: our staff will send research projects to markers and will upload the outcome to TMP when available.
    • For projects completed before September 2025: Project records will be uploaded into TMP by one of our staff.

Trainees with a research project submitted in TMP will be able to link the project to another Advanced Training program, if completing dual training or post-Fellowship training under another new curriculum.

    Case reports

A case report is a learning activity that demonstrates the trainees’ approach to a clinical or complex patient situation, including their clinical reasoning and evaluation skills, diagnostic process and management approach.

This assessment tool is currently in development. Further information, including requirements and guidance for completion, will be available in late 2025.

    Logbooks

Logbooks are learning tools that support trainees to record and reflect on specific workplace experiences. They help ensure adequate exposure to a broad range of clinical procedures, case types, and levels of complexity during training.

    • Find the logbook template and submission instructions (including frequency) in the relevant Advanced Training curricula.
    • How to submit: Trainees can submit their logbook via the TMP under the Assessment requirements tab. The specialty’s curricula will advise if supervisor feedback is required.
    • Outcome: our staff will review the submitted logbook and mark the requirement as complete.

    Learning theme

Learning themes enable trainees to meet specialty-specific training requirements in a flexible way. They're not included in all training programs.

For example, in paediatric training, the Developmental and Psychosocial (D&P) training could be completed through a designated training position or an approved learning module with relevant clinic time.

    • Find more information on learning themes in the relevant Basic or Advanced Training curricula.
    • How to complete in TMP: Go to the Assessment requirements tab and find Learning theme under Program level requirements. Select the relevant Learning theme and submit evidence or explanation of how the requirement was met.
    • Outcome: our staff will review the submitted learning theme and mark the requirement as complete.

AFRM In-training long case assessment (ITLCA)

An ITLCA is an assessment for Rehabilitation Medicine only, that evaluates trainees in real life settings and assesses their level of professional expertise and judgement in clinical cases.

    • How to submit: Trainees can submit the completed ITLCA via the TMP under the Assessment requirements tab.
    • Outcome: our staff will review the submitted ITLCA and mark the requirement as complete.
