Rotation plan submission and updates
I'm a Basic Trainee but my rotation allocation(s) for the year haven't yet been confirmed - should I still submit a rotation plan?
If you don't know the details of your rotation(s), select the rotation type as 'other' and add that your rotation allocation is to be confirmed in the 'additional comments' section. Once your rotations are confirmed you'll be able to update your rotation plan. Rotation plans must be updated no later than the rotation start date.
Do Basic Training Rotations Supervisors need to approve all the rotation plans at the start of the training year to ensure validation of professional experience requirements and invoicing processes for Basic Training?
No, Rotation Supervisors don't need to approve all rotation plans at the start of the training year.
Rotation plans for Basic Training don't initially require a nominated or approved Rotation Supervisor. Supervisor approval is also not needed for validating professional experience requirements or the invoicing process.
RACP staff will review rotation plans and validate them against training requirements. Once trainees identify their Rotation Supervisor, they can nominate them in the plan. The supervisor will then review the plan and suggest any necessary updates.
Trainees can edit submitted rotation plans, including modifying dates, rotation types, and learning goals, as well as nominating supervisors. However, plans cannot be edited after training time is certified.
Rotation plan approval and validation
Who will approve the rotation plan for Basic Training?
Rotation plans for Basic Training don't initially require a Rotation Supervisor to be nominated. They'll be reviewed by RACP staff and validated against the professional experience requirements for training. Once trainees know who their Rotation Supervisor is going to be, they can nominate the supervisor in the rotation plan. The supervisor will then review the rotation plan and can advise the trainee of any updates needed.
How will my professional experience requirements be validated (approved)?
Trainees will need to submit a rotation plan for the training year with the following details entered to ensure the professional experience requirements can be validated (approved):
- Add the Rotation Plan Type and Training Details including Rotation Period, Training Setting Details, Rotation Type (subspecialty) in the rotation plan.
- If a rotation type or subspeciality is yet to be finalised, please select 'other' and update once known.
- As a Basic Trainee, you're not required to include information in the “position description” in the “Rotation Type” section of the rotation plan.
- For your first rotation only, please select the checkbox to confirm that ‘the Rotation start date is also the start date of my Training Program’. This will enable your Training Program start date to be recorded.
- Tick the “Trainee Declarations”
For Basic Trainees, rotation supervisors don't need be assigned or approve their nomination on the rotation plan for staff to validate (approve) training time.
RACP staff will review and validate your training time after the 28 February deadline. Please allow up to 8 weeks for notification of the decision. You'll be notified of the decision by email and through your TMP portal.
Supervisor assignments on TMP
Where do I assign an Education Supervisor in TMP?
Education supervisors are a Basic Training only role and are assigned at the Training Program level. This is under the 'Training Plan' tab in TMP.
- For trainees: Go to TMP > My Training >Training program > Training plan
- For supervisors: Go to TMP > My Trainees >Trainee > Training plan
Can DPEs and medical education staff within the setting assign supervisors?
DPEs and Training Program Coordinators (TPCs) can update the Education Supervisor(s) for trainees within their relevant training settings.
For the first half of 2025, DPEs and TPCs won't be able to assign Education Supervisor(s) in the system, the trainee will need to nominate themselves. However, this functionality will be made available in later releases of TMP.
I've nominated my Education Supervisor and/or Rotation Supervisor on TMP, however the assignment status is listed as “Validation Required”.
This will happen if the trainee has ticked “Cannot find Supervisor” and added the supervisor details manually. RACP staff need to review this assignment and check that the supervisor meets the relevant supervision requirements. Please note that this does not impact training time validation or processing of invoices.
Supervision standards
Who can be a Rotation Supervisor?
A Rotation Supervisor is a clinician but isn't required to be a Fellow of the RACP.
There aren't any changes to who can act as a Rotation Supervisor from the PREP program in the new curricula. Speak to the DPE at your hospital/training site to find out more.
What is the trainee to supervisor ratio?
Adequate supervision is fundamental to delivering high-quality training and education. While the recommended supervision ratios in the Training Provider Standards (5.2.1) provide a benchmark, we recognise that individual training settings may face challenges in achieving them precisely.
During accreditation visits, flexibility will be considered, provided that the principle of appropriate supervision is maintained to ensure a supportive learning environment for trainees at all stages of their training.
Training requirements
Are there any changes to professional experience/time-based requirements including core and non-core?
There are some specialties which introduced changes to the professional experience/time-based requirements for their program. Check the specialty Learning, Teaching, and Assessment program on eLearning to confirm.
Developmental & psychosocial training (Paediatrics & Child Health Division)
The Developmental and Psychosocial (D&P) training is a requirement of the Paediatrics & Child Health Division that all paediatric trainees must complete during Basic or Advanced Training. The College is working to redefine how D&P training will be embedded in the new training programs.
Alternative options for completing D&P training and a timeline for implementation will be communicated during 2025. New D&P requirements will be developed, and any updates will be included in the relevant curricula standards and learning, teaching and assessment programs. Trainees and supervisors will be informed of updates with sufficient notice of any changes to ensure no disadvantage.
Until alternatives are available, it's important that trainees plan to complete the requirement for D&P training through one of the options currently available, to ensure eligibility for admission to Fellowship on completion of the requirements of Advanced Training. Trainees must satisfactorily complete this requirement to be eligible for admission to Fellowship under the Paediatrics & Child Health Division.
See the Learning, Teaching and Assessment programs for your training program for information on how to complete this training requirement.
What about exams? Are the eligibility criteria for sitting the DWE changing, i.e., is it still 24 months training time? Or is the decision about eligibility made by the Progress Review Panel?
Exam eligibility isn't changing and is outlined on the exams page under the 'Apply' tab.
Under the new curriculum, Basic Trainees will be eligible to sit the DWE once they've completed their Consolidation phase of training.
Learning course submissions in TMP
The learning courses required for RACP training programs will differ between training programs. Some courses are hosted on the RACP Online Learning platform and other courses you may be required to complete are provided by external organisations.
See section 2.2 of the TMP Learning courses guide on how to submit evidence that you've completed a required training course (including the Advanced Life Support course) in TMP.
Recognition of Prior Learning
How do I apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for the new curricula programs?
If you'd like to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning against the new curriculum standards, you must submit your application within 3 months of starting training.
A Guide for Applications, FAQs and application form can be downloaded from the Recognition of Prior Learning page. Please ensure Appendix D is completed using the new curriculum standards.
