Program overview

Occupational and Environmental MedicineTraining in Occupational and Environmental Medicine explores a new depth of specialty training in health and safety in the workplace and human health impacts of industrial practices. You will train under supervision and prepare for independent practice as a consultant. The program builds on your skills through work-based learning and assessment tools.

Program updates

The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Training Program is evaluated biennially by its Faculty Training Committee to ensure that it’s in line with educational best practice. Changes in program requirements may occur and could impact your training plan. The College will provide sufficient notice prior to implementing any change. You must always ensure you’re following the correct requirements during your training.

Entry requirements

The Occupational and Environmental Medicine Training Program has 3 stages:

  • Basic Stage (Stage A)
  • Advanced Stage (Stage B)
  • Advanced Stage (Stage C)

Entry to the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Training Program can occur at the beginning of the Basic Stage (Stage A) or at the beginning of the first Advanced Stage (Stage B).

Stage A eligibility

To apply for Stage A, you must:

  • hold general medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia if undertaking training in Australia or medical registration with general scope of practice with the Medical Council of New Zealand if undertaking training in Aotearoa New Zealand
  • have completed at least 2 full-time years of postgraduate general clinical experience
  • have applied for (with the intent of enrolling in and continuing) or completed an appropriate postgraduate course at diploma level or higher in occupational and environmental health or a related field deemed appropriate by the Faculty Training Committee — see postgraduate qualification guidelines
  • have an accredited position of employment that requires on average a minimum of 20 hours of occupational and environmental medicine practice per week
  • have reached an agreement with an occupational and environmental medicine Fellow to be your Educational Supervisor and have this approved by your regional Training Program Director.
Stage B eligibility

To apply for Stage B, you must meet the basic entry requirements (Stage A) and provide adequate evidence of comparable abilities or achievements.

Applicants must have completed an Advanced Life Support course and have provided a copy of your course certification, as well as one or more of the following:

  • completed Stage A of the Occupational and Environmental Medicine Advanced Training Program
  • completed RACP Basic Training in Adult Internal Medicine, including the Written and Clinical Examinations
  • completed the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine Training Program Modules 1 and 2
  • hold Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
  • hold Fellowship of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners
  • hold Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine

The allocation of a trainee to a stage depends upon the criteria that they meet. It doesn’t directly or necessarily relate to the nature of the work that they do or to the learning objectives that they add to their learning plan.

Trainees are allocated to a single stage. A trainee in Stage A is someone who is yet to satisfy the criteria for entry into Stage B. A trainee in Stage A may add a small number of Stage B learning objectives to their 6-monthly learning plan, depending on experiences anticipated in that period.

It’s acknowledged a trainee in Stage A is likely to undertake certain work or to attend a course that advances their knowledge or skills to the standard of Stage B. Such overlap is a natural consequence of the opportunistic nature of learning in this specialty.

If a trainee obtains the Stage B entry requirements whilst in Stage A, they are eligible to commence Stage B at the start of their next 6-month training period. Trainees must submit evidence that they have met the criteria to enter Stage B to OccEnvMed@racp.edu.au

New and current trainees need to apply for Advanced Training each year.

Duration

Training in Occupational and Environmental Medicine requires 3.5 years (42 months) of full-time equivalent (FTE) training.

Fellowship

Once you've completed all requirements of your training and the Faculty Training Committee has recommended you for admission, the College will invite you to apply for Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

See Becoming a Fellow for information on admission to Fellowship.

As a Fellow in active practice in Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas, you’ll need to meet the annual requirements of the Continuing Professional Development program.
