AFOEM News - June 2026

A message from your President

As I am sure you are aware, following 12 months of turmoil at Board level, the Australian Charities and Not-for profit Commission (ACNC) appointed Adjunct Professor Susan Pascoe AM as Chair of the RACP Board and suspended the RACP President-elect, Dr Chandran until September 2026. The ACNC continues its independent investigation into the governance of the RACP, and the RACP is also investigating the events surrounding the 22 April Extraordinary General Meeting. I urge you to read the RACP Board communiqué for further information. The RACP AGM took place on 29 May 2026, confirming the appointments of new elected directors and the incoming RACP President-elect, Dr Julian Kelly.

On 30 May, a Convocation Ceremony was held at Sydney Town Hall. It was a memorable and joyous afternoon, particularly for graduating New Fellows and their families and friends. I was privileged to welcome Drs Hundal, Qureshi and Wan into our Faculty, and wish them all the best for their careers. Convocation is a powerful symbol of our Faculty’s primary purpose – the education of our trainees.

The AFOEM ATM was held in Melbourne from 15 to 17 May, preceded by the Ramazzini Prize presentations on 14 May. Congratulations to Dr Laura Cameron for winning best presentation for her research project, “Evaluating Gaps in Occupational Medicine Education Among Final-Year Medical Students in Queensland: A Mixed Methods Pilot Study”. Many thanks to the organisers, presenters and College staff who made the event such a success. Planning is already underway for the 2027 ATM to be held in Perth in May, and further details will follow when available. The ATM weekend was saddened, however, by the tragic passing of WA trainee Dr Adebola Adeiye. Our condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues.

A key focus of our Faculty this year is a review of site accreditation criteria and the application form, and I thank you to the volunteers who have put their hands up to be part of this review. Mapping of our OEM Accreditation Standards to the new AMC Model Standards is now complete. This initiative is an important step in strengthening accreditation standards and processes for OEM, and in ensuring greater consistency and fairness in accreditation outcomes.

Our Annual Members’ Meeting (AMM) will be held virtually this year on 1 July from 4pm to 5pm AEST. Register here to attend. AFOEM Council recently discussed options to possibly hold the AMM in person in the future, and these ideas will be considered further to determine what might be possible.

Finally on education matters, on the AFOEM webpage are the dates and Zoom links for all Regional Training Meetings for 2026. Please support our trainees by attending when you can. If we all attend at least one, it will make a big difference to the educational value and, of course, the time can be claimed as CPD.

Dr Armand Casolin
AFOEM President

Best Practice in Occupational and Environmental Medicine Guidance Document
AFOEM and the Policy and Advocacy team have published an updated guidance document for Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) physician and trainees, reflecting the expanded scope of practice and evolving workplace laws. Replacing the 2016 Ethical Guidelines, this document provides guidance across key areas including health assessments, hazard identification, legal compliance, education and research, while addressing the complex responsibilities involved in balancing multiple stakeholders.

This significant update was led by the AFOEM P&A Committee, with particular thanks to Dr Neil Westphalen and Dr Kathryn Powell. The document is available via the P&A library and the AFOEM webpage.
